Raymond Edward Janifer was born in 1940s Norristown, Pennsylvania, and adopted at the age of three into a family on East Chestnut Street — the street that gives Chestnut Hollow Blues its name and its heartbeat. The loss of his adoptive mother at fourteen sent his young life off course; sport, community, and sheer determination brought it back. He earned a full athletic scholarship, then went on to earn three graduate degrees, including a doctorate.
